Was macht den Zufall so bedrohlich?

Polish cablecos set to open up networks
March 14, 2018 10.47 Europe/London By Chris Dziadul
Poland’s Office of Electronic Communications (UKE) has begun a consultation into cable operators opening up their networks to competition.
According to the regulator, it involves Orange Polska (headquartered in Warsaw), Netia (Warsaw), UPC Polska (Warsaw), Multimedia Polska (Gdynia), Inea (Poznan) and Toya (Lodz).
It adds that two documents form a key part of the consultation, namely conditions for providing access to technical infrastructure in the case of cable ducts and buildings’ sewage systems.
The consultation’s draft decisions will reflect the implementation of the UKE’s strategic plan for 2017-2020 and the European Digital Agenda and Europe 2020 Strategy, bringing Poland closer to the gigabit society.
The UKE concludes by saying that its president “hopes that the comments and suggestions made during the consultation will help to develop universal conditions for access to the infrastructure. The final decisions will lead to non-discrimination of operators and will help to reduce costs and increase investment, which will benefit not only telecommunications undertakings but, above all, subscribers”.

DNA renews C More agreement
March 14, 2018 11.16 Europe/London By Julian Clover
DNA is extending its agreement with Bonnier’s MTV. The pay-TV platform plans to give its subscribers access to content in the C More streaming service.
The precise content will be determined by the package subscribed to and will be available via the DNA Hub, a computer, or mobile using the DNA app.
“We are glad that DNA’s customers can now enjoy the entire content offering provided by C More. DNA is the largest cable operator and pay TV provider in Finland, so DNA’s customers form a significant group of new C More viewers,” says Johannes Leppänen, who heads MTV’s consumer business.
The offer includes thousands of hours of programmes every and an increasing amount of C More original productions that have their TV premieres in the C More streaming service. The major Finnish production this spring is the comedy series Sunnuntailounas (pictured), which will be available from 29 March.
“The renewal provides DNA’s customers with the opportunity to enjoy the original C More series that premiere in the service. At the moment, the service provides the first seasons of the series Aallonmurtaja, which received a Venla award, and Onnela, the Finnish version of Solsidan. In addition, top sports moments such as live sports and recordings of live events are available in the C More streaming service. Front row seats will be available on C More when the F1 season starts on 25 March in Australia,” says Leppänen.
All content in the programme library will be available to the C More channel package subscribers without any additional charges.

TiVo: Cost still on the minds of cordcutters

TiVo: Cost still on the minds of cordcutters
March 14, 2018 13.01 Europe/London By Julian Clover
The perceived high cost of pay-TV packages continues to be the number one reason for customer dissatisfaction, according to TiVo’s latest Online Video and Pay-TV Trends Report.
According to the report, which concentrates on North America, 86.7 per cent said price was the reason they cancelled a pay-TV service. While the number of those who said they had cut the cord in Q4 2017 is at its lowest point since the Q3 2016 survey, those who had been without a cable or satellite service in the last 12 months has increased by 6.1 per cent quarter over quarter and 4.6 points year on year.
The DVR and search specialist says this highlights the importance of subscriber retention to pay-TV providers. In addition to price consumers say they are using streaming services such as Netflix, Hulu and Amazon Video or using an antenna to get their basic channels. Price increased as a factor by 6.6 per cent year on year, while the other two reasons declined in popularity.
TiVo suggests that more use could be made of subscriber data to identify those with a higher risk of churn.
The report takes a look at smart speakers, such as Amazon’s Alexa or Google Home, where the fourth most-popular usage of smart speakers is to stream and watch video content on a TV.
Consistent with last quarter’s results, the living room and bedroom are the two most popular locations for smart speakers.
The living room increased in popularity by 3.1 percentage points on the quarter and the bedroom increased 5 percentage points quarter on quarter, while the kitchen decreased in popularity by 4.8 percentage points.

TDG: all major US Networks to go DTC by 2022

Taking their lead from Disney’s stated ambition to pivot to D2C, all major TV networks will likely launch standalone direct-to-consumer (DTC) streaming services over the next five years according to a new report from The Diffusion Group.

Examining not only the growth of DTC subscription services but also what it calls the emerging 'media tribalism', the Future of Direct-to-Consumer Video Services - Analysis & Forecasts, 2018-2028 report notes that industry first flirted with DTC models three years ago when HBO and CBS launched the industry's first standalone subscription services. TDG believes that today both brands enjoy five million paying DTC subscribers and are well placed in a market where the unbundling of cable TV packages is set to accelerate over the next five years.

Leading the charge will be Disney which is set to launch its much-anticipated ESPN Plus DTC product, and plans to roll out a branded DTC service in early 2019 featuring animated films and Marvel and Star Wars titles, among other high-value content.

“Big media companies are reacting more boldly to changes in TV viewing behaviour, observed Mike Berkley, TDG senior advisor and author of the Future of Direct-to-Consumer Video Services - Analysis & Forecasts, 2018-2028 report. “Consolidating, bulking up on originals, and marketing directly to consumers are driving their strategic direction. These are early signs of an emerging media tribalism," argues Berkley. "Major networks will increasingly reserve their best titles for their own direct-to-consumer services, which will help drive total network DTC subscriptions close to 50 million by 2022.

Yet despite the general optimism, Berkley cautioned however, that DTC strategies come with great risk, especially for TV networks. “The legacy model is built upon decades of comfortable relationships between networks and operators,” he noted. “If networks extract too much high-value content too quickly, channel conflicts are inevitable.”

Parks Associates research has found that live TV viewing in the US has continued to decline with 60% of video viewed on the TV now from on-demand services with the trend particularly pronounced among young consumers.

The Shifting Video Consumption: Linear vs. On-Demand report measured the shift in consumption from linear to on-demand across platforms and sources of content to assess how this shift will impact the business of broadcast, pay-TV and online TV. It found that just over a quarter of television viewing by consumers ages 18 to 34 was of live sources, including pay-TV, over-the-air channels, and livestreaming.

In addition, it observed that the highest average consumption of linear TV content was among married respondents (at 7.8 hours) while the highest average consumption of non-linear TV content is among respondents who are unmarried and living with a partner at 13.1 hours.

“Live TV is far from dead, but on-demand sources are claiming an increasingly large portion of viewing,” said Brett Sappington, senior analyst, Parks Associates, commenting on the report. “In addition, a larger portion of live content viewing is moving online. Among TV viewers who watch live broadcasts on a TV, 17% of their live TV viewing is through an online video service with live content such as CBS All-Access, Univision Now or PlutoTV. Among heads of households under the age of 35 who watch live TV, the percentage of online sources jumps to 30%. Interestingly, consumers who have never had pay-TV still spend approximately one-third of their TV viewing time watching live content, primarily from over-the-air TV channels. They also spend almost half as much time watching video on a TV overall as do average broadband households.”

Looking forward in The Shifting Video Consumption: Linear vs. On-Demand report, Parks expected viewers to retain the habits they have grown up with and used over time, and advised the pay-TV industry and advertisers that was important for them to adjust their business approach and offerings to align with the expectations and viewing habits of TV-viewing consumer segments.

‘It’s the economy, stupid’ has long been a political mantra and could also be applied to cord-cutting as the 20th edition of TiVo’s quarterly Video Trends Report has revealed.

Based on a survey of more than 3,300 consumers, TiVo’s Q4 2017 Online Video and Pay-TV Trends Report showed that the high cost of cable/satellite service continues to be a prominent topic when surveying respondents on their pay-TV service and that unsurprisingly price was the top reason cord-cutters cancelled pay-TV service, and the number one reason for dissatisfaction among pay-TV subscribers.

For those who had cut their pay-TV service, 86.7% of these respondents cancelled service because of its high price. This price dissatisfaction had increased 6.6% year-on-year and was at its highest rate since Q3 2016. For respondents who were unsatisfied with their pay-TV service, 83.1% regarded the main reason as “too expensive/Increasing fees for cable/satellite services.”

While lowering prices was not seen as a realistic option, the report highlighted other ways pay-TV providers can demonstrate the value of their offerings, as well as differentiate themselves from vMVPDs and their skinny bundle offerings. Indeed the study found that vMVPDs seemed to have found the pricing sweet spot for entry-level offerings. The average price US respondents want to pay for a package of self-selected channels wad $35.87 per month, which is in line with the actual prices of DirecTV NOW, Sling TV and YouTube TV.

Another key trend emerging was that respondents’ ownership of both smart speakers and streaming devices was at an all-time high. While smart speaker manufacturers haven’t yet focused on seamlessly integrating live TV into its product, TiVo was confident this functionality is on the horizon. It added that pay-TV providers must prepare for the battle over the living room. The company questioned as to when a user presented a query to a smart speaker, would the device recommend its own manufacturer’s content, or would it suggest the user’s pay-TV content.

According to Q4 2017 survey results, the Amazon Echo and Dot together have 57% market share. Also, the Amazon Fire TV Stick, with 14% market share, experienced the greatest percentage growth in the streaming device category with increases of 5.0 percentage points q/q and 5.8 points y/y. TiVo said that when you pair this with the fact that 63.9% of all smart speakers are in respondents’ living rooms, and it became evident that pay-TV providers who don’t quickly lay claim to voice-enabled video experiences risk losing their connection with the viewer and their presence in the living room.

TiVo also found that as 2017 progressed, sports streaming grew in popularity, and that 28.2% of respondents had streamed a sporting event. According to respondents, the most popular sites for streaming sports are Facebook, Amazon and NFL.com. Those who watched sports four hours or more a were more likely than those who watch zero to two hours a day to “always” be frustrated when trying to find sports content do the following (77.9%); more likely to stream sports online (111.9%); more likely to check sports scores on a smart speaker (191.1%). Analysing its results in this sector, TiVo warned broadcast networks to be concerned that the data smart speaker manufacturers can now gather from people checking sports scores as well as the targeted marketing it enables.

This quarter’s results also showed the largest positive jump in respondents’ sentiments toward their ability to find something to watch on their pay-TV service. With the many competing offerings available today, this, said TiVo, was positive news for pay-TV providers. Almost 70% of respondents felt it was easy to find something to watch through their pay-TV service, and these overall satisfaction levels increased 11.1 percentage points y/y and 11.9 points over two years. In terms of SVOD content discovery, 85% of respondents were pleased with their ability to find something to watch on their SVOD service, an increase of 3.8 percentage points y/y and 5 points over two years.
